In 1864,
Municipality System was started in Jabalpur. In this regard old
records are not traceable, but for Gazetteer & other old
historical record same light in thrown about the system. In the
year 1817 Europeans came here as a winner and within few hands
they defeated the Maratha Army and captured the Jabalpur City.
Cantonment area became the permanent resident of their Army.
Thus with the aim to provide the civilian infrastructural
facilities of Cantonment Area the Cantonment Board was
established in the year 1826.
At present 5162
employees are working in the Nagar Nigam, on which approximately
7.00 crore is spent annually. In the year 1988 annual income of
Nagar Nigam was around 16.00 crore & expenditure was Rs.15.00
crore.

Only in Sanitation Cell around
2000 workers are engaged. 210 Gallon drinking water is supplied
by Nagar Nigam every day
which comes from Khandhai and Pariyat Reservoir and also from
Narmada & Gaur River. Supply of water from Khandai Reservoir is
almost negligible. Some drinking water supply is maintained from
Tube-well & hand pump from different areas. Up to 01-10-1963,
125 Primary Schools, 13 Higher Secondary Schools & 5 Degree
Colleges were running in the Education Cell of Nagar Nigam. In
addition to this one Bal Mandir & one Sanskrit Degree College
was running, presently they are under the jurisdiction of
Cantonment.
In the beginning
the population of this city was around 60-70 thousands which has
now increased tremendously and gone around 11.00 lacs.
